The ARTIC Intermodal Facility in Anaheim Begins Getting Its Shell
The ARTIC building now appears to be bubble-wrapped, but it’s just the sun glancing off huge sheets of “glass” being installed around the building’s shell. ARTIC’s steel-framed, domed exterior will require 200,000 s.f. of ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) and glass cladding. Solar radiation levels will be controlled in an energy efficient manner within this highly transparent enclosure. The ETFE foil “pillows” provide a highly insulating system at 1/10th the weight of glass and allows the building to respond to environmental conditions, thereby reducing ARTIC’s overall carbon footprint. The building’s systems combine radiant cooling with mixed-mode natural ventilation through motorized windows and mechanical ventilation through jet nozzles.
The ARTIC intermodal facility, scheduled to be opened first quarter 2015, will accommodate various travel options, including Metrolink, Amtrak, bus, shuttle and taxi systems. Once fully built, this impressive 67,000 s.f. building is sure to become another eye-catching Anaheim icon.
