Laguna Beach-Blue Bird Canyon Landslide

Client:
City of Laguna Beach
Laguna Beach, CA

Description:
In June 2005, a massive landslide caused tremendous damage, utterly destroying an entire neighborhood of upscale homes in the Blue Bird Canyon area of Laguna Beach. Various Federal, State and local agencies, including the Office of Emergency Services and the regional Water Quality Control Board, were involved in assisting with this national disaster.

Fuscoe Engineering was asked to provide rehabilitative civil engineering services, including grading, drainage, sewer and water plans and significant winterization efforts. The process is complicated by a tight time schedule to complete the work prior to the onset of winter rains, which can cause increased flooding, mud slides and structural instability. Furthermore, the proximity of adjacent homes complicates the grading, and drainage and sewer systems were completely destroyed, requiring major repair work and replacement facilities.

Fuscoe Engineering is willing and able to marshal its principals and top staff to help our community with this emergency, and is contributing “creative” solutions “on-the-spot” to stop the impacts of the slide. Our primary efforts focus on relief drainage for flooding; slope protection and run-off control; working personally with each surrounding resident affected by the slide and responding to their concerns; and helping residents plan and design new replacement homes.

Project Status:
Projected for completion September 2006
