Project Description

CSU San Bernardino Demonstration Gardens

CSU San Bernardino converted a 1.2-acre high water demand lawn to more efficient Water-Wise Demonstration Gardens. The project includes a sunken learning center, xeriscape container gallery, meandering pervious concrete walkway and an infiltration bioswale to convey the importance of aquifer recharge and treatment of runoff. Walking trails of decomposed granite include observance/study nodes. The project features collections of California natives, desert themed planting and groundcovers/lawn substitutes. Fuscoe prepared grading plans, a Hydrology Study/Stormwater Quality Analysis and a SWPPP for the project.

List of Gardens:

  • California Native Plant Garden
  • Desert Gardens: Cacti, succulents and other drought-tolerant plantings
  • Shade Garden: Drought-tolerant plants that tolerate shade
  • Groundcovers and Lawn Substitutes
  • Mediterranean Garden: Showcases drought-tolerant, California-friendly plant collections adapted from Mediterranean regions
  • Fragrance Garden: Fragrant California-friendly trees, shrubs perennials and groundcovers
