Los Alamitos Race Course & Cypress Business Center
In the mid-1990s, Fuscoe provided designs for a major “facelift” of the clubhouse, grandstands and race track at Los Alamitos Race Course (LARC). Fuscoe also addressed flood detention, expanded parking and a new four-story, 155-suite Residence Inn by Marriott. As a result, Fuscoe was asked to assist in entitlement-to-use processing for an adjacent 300-acre property. This site, which includes the Cypress Golf Course, will be redeveloped into a mixed-use business park. Fuscoe provided preliminary engineering services, including survey and mapping and retention designs to meet downstream flooding constraints. The project is politically charged, so the developers and Fuscoe are working closely to head-off possible issues.
In 2013, LARC launched a program to enlarge its existing race track from 5/8th of a mile to one mile in length. The enlargement was needed to accommodate thoroughbred racing dates transferred to LARC from the recently closed Hollywood Park Race Course. The track expansion’s civil engineering design effort included earthwork embankment, backstretch perimeter retaining wall, fill slopes, track surface horizontal control, track surface vertical control, super-elevation on turns three and four, track infield grading and drainage around an existing infield lake. In 2014, Fuscoe assisted LARC with design and approvals for 300 additional horse stalls.
