Award-winning Sunset Park, situated on 18.2 acres, includes amenities such as sports courts, ball fields, playgrounds, splash pad, restroom facilities, picnic areas, parking lots, walking trails and a caretaker unit. Balancing the earthwork cut and fill volumes on the hillside site, while preserving the project site plan was particularly challenging, requiring innovative grading design solutions that also minimized impacts to adjacent property owners. The site and grading designs were crafted to preserve an existing wetland drainage channel with buffer zones to protect sensitive habitat and a pedestrian bridge spans the channel, linking the two sides of the park. Fuscoe’s drainage and water quality design included detention basins and vegetated swales. Runoff from the splash pad drains to a graded swale where water infiltrates and recharges the groundwater table. A decorative rock-lined drainage channel with boulders and weir walls was also incorporated into the landscape design. Also, Fuscoe, working closely with the Vista Irrigation District, developed plans for relocation of a major onsite waterline and both the Vallecitos Water District and Buena Sanitation District collaborated on sewer plans for the park. Fuscoe was the team lead in coordinating landscape design, architecture, site electrical and well-drilling activities.
