Project Description

UCSD Housing & Dining Admin Building

UC San Diego new four-story facility serves as headquarters for the Departments of Housing & Dining Services and Catering Services. The Catering Department’s 10,800 gsf floor plan includes a kitchen, offices, locker and break rooms, dry storage and restrooms, as well as loading dock capabilities and parking for students and staff. The Housing & Dining Services allotment, measuring approximately 43,000 gsf, includes office and conference room space and restrooms.

The $18M building, designed by Studio E Architects, involved a detailed lay-out for all four stories and roof. Construction staking included site utilities and hardscape. This was a constricted infill site surrounded by pre-existing buildings. The existing utilities crossing the site presented unique challenges to minimize interruption of utilities service, confirm clearances to existing structures and match new hardscape to the current design. The steel and concrete slab-on-grade structure is notable for its rippling glass screen wall mounted in front of the building, which provides sun glare and thermal protection to the interior spaces. At the top, the glass creates a wind break that protects an open terrace. Project LEED® features include water efficient landscaping, optimized energy performance through enhanced commissioning of mechanical and electrical systems, community connectivity, low-emitting materials, daylighting, and implementation of a Green Operations & Maintenance Plan, including green housekeeping.
