The Catalina Island Conservancy oversees all of Catalina Island’s 42,000 acres of open space and this LEED® Gold project is its headquarters, information center and starting point for guided tours of the island.
Fuscoe provided comprehensive civil engineering services for the project, as well as a SUSMP Report and stormwater mitigation/LID plans. Grading for the site and parking areas proved challenging and was resolved by a combination of valley gutter, rolled curb, vertical curb and ramped sidewalk. The lack of underground storm drain connection posed additional issues, so below ground treatment was not possible, but hydrologic/hydraulic analysis of the proposed rainwater collection system confirmed LID requirements were satisfied. The sewer connection was also challenging, as it is adjacent to the pump station that handles the city of Avalon’s wastewater and is located in the main thoroughfare with dozens of other utilities. Connection to the existing sewer wet well was determined after exploring many different options.
