Project Description

Del Mar Fairgrounds

Del Mar Fairgrounds is undergoing significant improvements as identified in its long term Master Plan, including addition of an exhibit hall, train platform station and parking structures. In partnership with LSA Associates, FEI is providing construction staking, engineering, flood control impact assessments, hydrology/hydraulic modeling, water quality BMPs, and permitting services to facilitate the Master Plan with EIR documentation and technical studies. Notable constraints include the significant flooding impacts of the local watershed; tidal influences of the San Dieguito River; multiple sewer/storm water dual systems throughout the property; local and regional desires to increase the amount of habitat and wetland; and establishment of a trail system for setback and habitat restoration.

As part of the EIR / Master Plan process, FEI facilitated the development of a new Memorandum of Understanding between the City of Del Mar and the Fairgrounds that allows for the expansion of the exhibit halls and other facilities while setting design controls for peak flows, average flows and annual flow amounts. Since approval of the EIR and Master Plan, FEI has been working closely with 22nd District Agricultural Association (DAA) to devise a comprehensive storm water solution for the backstretch and racetrack areas. The solution involves detailed hydrology and hydraulic modeling; significant infrastructure improvements to further separate storm from sewer; and integration of a state-of-the-art disinfection system combined with enhanced storm water management functions within the existing in-field lakes.
